Skinny jeans, on even skinnier celebrities such as Kate Bosworth, Kate Moss and Mischa Barton are ’so hot right now’. But everyday women need to be realistic about whether they can pull off the look — you need a super tiny backside and skinny legs.
However if you can’t fit into size zero jeans, don’t despair. There’s a style of jeans for everyone – it’s just about finding the right one for you and to do that you have to be committed to trying on lots of pairs.
Nova radio host Biana Dye is a jean junkie and her main rule when it comes to buying jeans is avoid the muffin top.
“There is nothing worse than seeing the muffin overhang, I don’t care how old you are. And that is when the jeans is so tight around the waist that you have a bit of fat that hangs, like a balcony shall we say, over the jeans. If you’ve got the muffin overhang either wear a really long t-shirt or don’t wear them,” Bianca says.
Kerri Alcorn, Editor of Shop Til You Drop says this summer it’s all about the cut, not the cost.
Kerri says a distress pattern on the thighs will help to minimise bigger legs, higher waisted jeans are better for bigger women, and skinny jeans fitted to the ankle will help a petite woman look curvy.
More tips
Make sure the jeans are long enough to wear with heels or boots.
A slight flare will make short legs look longer.
Darker colours will make you look slimmer.
Avoid jeans with detailing in areas you don’t want to highlight – such as elaborate embroidery on back pockets if you don’t want to draw attention to your backside.
Terminology
Boot-cut: These jeans have a slight flare at the leg opening so they are just wide enough to wear your boots underneath. They look great with boots or heels.
Flare: These styles are fitted down to the knee and then flared at the ankle opening. They are tamer than bell bottoms of the 60s, and can add length to short legs.
Skinny/slim: Fits close through the seat and thigh, all the way down to the ankle. Ideal for those with a slim figure.
Straight leg: Usually the same width through the thigh, knee and ankle opening, these jeans are straight and relaxed but not narrow.
Hipsters/low-rise: These jeans sit on the hips, rather than the waist.
